Description and Goals

1. On the DESY campus there are a myriad of cable connections for various applications . A detailed documentation of these compounds is essential to keep track of it. The current documentation practice is very different in every DESY group. However, almost no group uses a modern, computer-based documentation tool, but inadequate tools such as paper, Excel spreadsheets or systems acquired from IBM times. Due to lack of resources there has been repeated erroneous switching or repair problems that have led to unintended shutdowns of the accelerator. A modern , computer-based documentation tool will reduce the frequency of errors in repair and cable routing, simplify installations and leads to more efficient and more economical new installations.

2. At the end of the KDS project, a modern computer based cable documentation system will be available to be used by all DESY groups. Existing 'old' electronic documentation can be imported into the new system . The employees of the groups are trained to create and update their documentation .

3. The system will allow a lower error rate and a much more efficient and economical working in all matters of cableing. It will support an integrated information exchange across all groups. The KDS will facilitate the order processing and documentation. A cable documentation is now considered  as necessary for the new projects PETRAIII , FLASH, XFEL by many groups.
